EIT Awards Night – May 2021

Rotary Recognising Excellence in the Trades

In May this year, the 43rd year of the Rotary Club of Greenmeadows/Eastern Institute of Technology Trade Training Awards were held in Napier. The Awards Ceremony was initiated in 1978 by the late Jim Callinicos. Jim was the second President of the Greenmeadows club and a former President of the Motor Trades Association. He saw the need to recognise the achievements of these young people and as a result the annual awards ceremony was established. The Callinicos award was presented by Tony, one of Jim’s sons.

Employers and representatives of the trades involved generously sponsor prizes, to celebrate the success of individuals with their trades training and apprenticeships. Nine trades are represented from Automotive, through Engineering, Electrical, Hospitality, Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying  to the latest additions of Hairdressing and Barbering.

A notable feature of this year’s awards was the number of female recipients across these trades – approximately 40% in 2021!

The Rotary Club is responsible for the catering and the guest speaker for the evening. This year local entrepreneur and CEO of the fast-growing telco “NOW”, which is based in Napier, Mr Hamish White spoke to the hundreds of guests attending.

President Frank Heuser presents the Mike Davis Memorial Award cheque to top apprentice Philip Murray

The final award of the evening, the Mike Davis Memorial Award, was presented by Greenmeadow’s President Frank Heuser. Mike Davis was a former president of the club who died shortly after the Awards Ceremony was established. This award is for the top apprentice over all and carries with it a Rotary prize of $2000. The 2021 recipient was Philip Murray an electrical apprentice who also had the highest marks in the region for the national ITO Trade Exams in 2020.
